WikiLeaks support rally a success: Pirate Party
Tim Lohman (Computerworld) 17 January, 2011
The Australian Pirate Party has declared the rally held in Sydney over the weekend in support of WikiLeaks a success, claiming attendance of up to 1000 people.
Speakers at the event – organised by the WikiLeaks Support Coalition – included Pirate Party Australia president Rodney Serkowski, NSW Greens MP David Shoebridge, and a statement read out by social commentator and columnist, Phillip Adams.
According to Pirate Party Australia acting secretary, Brendan Molloy, the rally and march were intended to show support and solidarity with WikiLeaks.
“[We want] to spread the word about [US embassy cable leaker] Bradley Manning and his detention and what [the US government] is doing with his pre-trial and to bring attention to Julian Assange’s situation, and that we will not concede freedom of press and information,” he said.
Speaking at the rally, NSW Greens MP, David Shoebridge, said the Australian government should support Assange and WikiLeaks.

Sydney Protest: 500 rally for Wikileaks
By Nate Cochrane on Jan 17, 2011 12:08 PM
To a chorus of "democracy not hypocrisy" about 500 Wikileaks supporters filed through the heart of Sydney at the weekend calling for the release of alleged whistleblower Bradley Manning and fair treatment for the Australian Julian Assange, as part of an international day of action.
On Saturday, organisers called for a social media uprising and supporters to follow Wikileaks' lead to build similar sites of their own to publish secret documents such as the leaked diplomatic cables that embarrassed the US Government. Police said they estimated 400-450 protesters while organisers said 600 was "optimistic".
"We're not reliant on the mass media any more, we can all publish to a global audience through the blogosphere," Pirate Party member Simon Frew told the rally.
"Big Media has largely abandoned the role of holding governments and corporations to account and it's up to us, ordinary people, to step into the breach and fulfill the role of citizen journalists."
Pirate Party Australia president-elect Rodney Serkowski said the response to Wikileaks showed "how important network freedom is".
Serkowski said the US Government's move last week to subpoena the social media records of those associated with Wikileaks could be expanded to anyone who has had anything to do with the organisation.

Supporters of Julian Assange take to Sydney streets
AAP January 15, 2011 3:47PM
MORE than a thousand advocates of free speech have taken to the streets of Sydney in support of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
Australian-born Mr Assange has enraged the United States by leaking American diplomatic cables that embarrassed world leaders.
He is currently on bail in England as he fights attempts to extradite him to Sweden for questioning on allegations of sexual assault.
NSW Greens MP David Shoebridge told the crowd of more than 1000 people in central Sydney on Saturday that the Australian government should support Mr Assange after Prime Minister Julia Gillard dubbed the website "unlawful".
"The actions of WikiLeaks are not only lawful, they're essential for fostering free speech in the 21st century. That's why we're here to support those actions."
